    The controllability of nonautonomous systems of the form \(\dot x=A(t)x+B(t)u\) is considered where \(A(t)\in L^ 1_{loc}(I,M^{n\times n}(C^{r\times r}))\) and B belongs to a similar space. If A is in `block' companion form and \(B_{ij}=0\) for \(i<n\) then it is shown that a necessary and sufficient condition for controllability at \(t_ 0\) is that the set of t for which \(\dim_ C\{B_{n1}(t),...,B_{nm}(t)\}=r^ 2\) is dense in a certain sense.
