\textit{D. Kerr} and \textit{H. Li} [Commun. Math. Stat. 1, No. 2, 213--257 (2013; Zbl 1315.37025)] introduced independence tuples for sofic entropy, and here these are modified to use distance in the \(\ell^q\)-norm (rather than the \(\ell^{\infty}\)-norm). It is shown that this does reproduce the same notion, but provides additional flexibility in its applications. Motivated in part by earlier results of the author [``Polish models and sofic entropy'', \url{arXiv:1411.1510}, to appear in J. Inst. Math. Jussieu], the notion is additionally modified in terms of the analogue of an action given by a sofic approximation. Using these, the author characterizes positivity of the logarithm of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant for matrices over the integral group ring of sofic groups and hence extends the known results on settings where sofic group actions have completely positive topological entropy with respect to any sofic approximation, answering a question raised by \textit{C. Deninger} [Münster J. Math. 2, No. 1, 45--64 (2009; Zbl 1245.11107)].
