The operator monotonicity is studied and three fundamental types of monotonicity in the setting of possible infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces are considered. A square real matrix \(A\) is called monotone if \(Ax \geq 0 \Rightarrow x \geq 0\), where \(x = (x_i) \geq 0\) means that \(x_i \geq 0\) for all \(i\). The known notion of square monotonicity of finite matrices is extended to operators on Hilbert spaces and a generalization of \textit{L. Collatz}'s result [Arch. Math. 3, 366--376 (1952; Zbl 0048.09802)] that \(A\) is monotone if \(A^{-1}\) exists and \(A^{-1}\) is positive is presented. Also, rectangular monotonicity is studied and extension of \textit{O. L. Mangasarian}'s result [SIAM. Rev. 10, 439--441 (1968; Zbl 0179.05102)] is given. Finally, the notion of semimonotonicity is generalized and a characterization is presented.
