The paper under review considers the periodic discrete nonlinear equation of the form \[ \begin{aligned} Lu_n-\omega u_n=\pm g_n(u_n),\;n\in \mathbb{Z},\;\lim_{|n|\to \infty}u_n=0, \end{aligned} \] where \(L\) is a Jacobi operator and the nonlinearities \(g_n(s)\) are asymptotically linear as \(|s|\to \infty\). The main result of this paper provides the existence of nontrivial gap solitons of the above equation via variational methods under certain assumptions on the nonlinearities. In addition, the authors also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of gap solitons. The paper uses the approach based on a variant generalized weak linking theorem due to \textit{M. Schechter} and \textit{W. Zou} [ESAIM, Control Optim. Calc. Var. 9, 601--619 (2003; Zbl 1173.35482)].
