Let \(\nu\) be an \(X\)-valued countably additive measure on a \(\sigma\)-algebra \(\Sigma\) of subsets of a set \(\Omega\), where \(X\) is a Banach space. Let \({\mathcal M}\) be the space of real-valued measurable functions on \(\Omega\). The author defines a \(\nu\)-norm function to be a map \(\rho:X^\ast \times {\mathcal M}\rightarrow [0,\infty]\) which has to obey some conditions (probably modeled after \(\rho(x^\ast,f)=\int| f| \,d| x^\ast\nu| \)). Now, for \(f\in {\mathcal M}\), put \(\rho_\nu(f)=\sup_{x^{\ast}\in B_{X^{\ast}}}\rho(x^\ast,f)\) and let \(E_{w}(\rho_\nu)=\{f\in {\mathcal M}:\rho_\nu (| f| )<\infty\}\). It is then shown (using the existence of a Rybakov control measure) that \(E_{w}(\rho_\nu)\), with norm \(\rho_\nu\), is a Banach function subspace of \(L_w^1 (\nu)\). Here \(L_w^1 (\nu)\) denotes the functions in \({\mathcal M}\) which are integrable with respect to \(x^\ast \nu\) for every \(x^\ast \in X^\ast\). Next the author defines \(E(\rho_\nu)\) to be the closure of the simple functions in \(E_{w}(\rho_\nu)\) and shows that this is a Banach function subspace of \(L^1 (\nu)\). The next question is now whether Banach function subspaces of \(L^1 (\nu)\) in some generality can be produced in this way. The main result in the paper is that every order continuous Banach function subspace of \(L^1 (\nu)\) is an \(E(\rho_\nu)\)-space for some \(\nu\)-norm \(\rho\).
