The authors investigate amenable and weakly amenable Banach algebras wich have compact multiplication. Several results are obtained; in particular it is proved that a semisimple amenable Banach algebra with compact multiplication and with the approximation property is a topological direct sum of full matrix algebras. A new example of a commutative, weakly amenable, non-amenable, radical Banach algebra is given.
