The problem considered in this paper is the local uniformization problem for valuations centered on Noetherian local rings. The classical situation (for Noetherian local domains) is the following: Let \((R,\mathfrak m)\) be a local domain and let \(\nu\) be a valuation centered on \(R\), i.e. \(\nu\) is a valuation of \(R\) such that \(\nu(a)\geq 0\) for every \(a\in R\) and \(\nu(a)>0\) for every \(a\in\mathfrak m\). The problem of local uniformization for \((R,\nu)\) is the problem of the existence of a dominant morphism of local domains \(R\longrightarrow R^{(1)}\) such that \(\nu\) is centered on \(R^{(1)}\). In the previous paper [in: Valuation theory in interaction. Proceedings of the 2nd international conference and workshop on valuation theory, Segovia and El Escorial, Spain, July 18--29, 2011. Zürich: European Mathematical Society (EMS). 404--431 (2014; Zbl 1312.13010)] the authors proved that the local uniformization problem is true if it is true for rank one valuations. In this paper the authors investigate a generalization of this problem for Noetherian local rings, not necessarily irreducible or reduced. First they introduce a notion of local uniformization for non-reduced local rings. Namely: Let \((R,\mathfrak m)\) be a Noetherian local ring and let \(\nu\) be a valuation centered on \(R\), i.e. \(\nu\) is a valuation of \(R\) such that \(\nu(a)\geq 0\) for every \(a\in R\) and \(\nu(a)>0\) for every \(a\in\mathfrak m\). The problem of local uniformization for \((R,\nu)\) is the existence of a local blowing up \(R\longrightarrow R^{(1)}\) such that \(R^{(1)}_{\text{red}}\) is regular, \(\nu\) is centered on \(R^{(1)}\) and \(\text{Spec}(R^{(1)})\) is normally flat along \(\text{Spec}(R^{(1)}_{\text{red}})\). Let us recall that \(\text{Spec}(R^{(1)})\) is normally flat along \(\text{Spec}(R^{(1)}_{\text{red}})\) if the all the quotients \(N^i/N^{i+1}\) are \(R^{(1)}_{\text{red}}\)-free when \(N\) denotes the nilradical of \(R^{(1)}\). The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the local uniformization problem for non-reduced local rings is true if it is true for rank one valuations.
