    Let \((E,\|\cdot\|)\) be a Banach space. Then a bounded linear operator \(\varphi\) in \(E\) is said to be a shift operator if \((*1)\) (i) \(\varphi\) is injective; (ii) the range of \(\varphi\) has codimension \(1\); (iii) \(\bigcap^\infty_{j= 1} \varphi^j(E)= \{0\}\). In the first main theorem of this paper the authors show that: \((*2)\) if \(A\) is a function algebra on a compact Hausdorff space \(X\), \(X= Ch(A)\), and if \(\varphi\) is a linear isometry on \(A\) with range of codimension \(1\), then there is a closed subset \(F\) of \(X\), a continuous map \(\gamma\) from \(F\) onto \(X\) and a unimodular function \(u\in C(F)\), the space of continuous functions on \(F\), such that \(\varphi(f)(x)= u(x) f(\gamma(x))\), \(x\in F\), \(f\in A\). If \(\mathbb{C}\) denotes the complex plane, \(\overline D= \{z\in\mathbb{C}; | z|\leq 1\}\), then further results of the paper include \((*3)\) if \(A\) is the disc algebra consisting of analytic functions on \(\overline D\), and if \(\varphi\) is a linear isometry on \(A\) with range of codimension \(1\), then there are complex numbers \(\beta\), \(\mu\), \(a\), \(b\), such that \(|\beta|= 1\), \(|\mu|= 1\), \(| a|<1\), \(| b|<1\), and \(\varphi(f)(z)= \mu M_a(z) f(\beta M_b(z))\), \(| z|= 1\), \(f\in A\), where \(M_a(z)= (z- a)/(1-\overline a z)\). The main initial results are stated as being extensions of results of \textit{A. Gutek}, \textit{D. Hart}, \textit{J. Jamison} and \textit{M. Rajagopalan} [J. Funct. Anal. 101, 97-119 (1991; Zbl 0818.47028)].
