The authors prove the generalized Hyers-Ulam stability of the following functional equations \[ f(x^2)= f(x)x+xf(x),\qquad f(xy)= f(x)y+xf(y) \] where \(f\) maps a Banach algebra into itself. As a consequence of the obtained result, every \(\varepsilon\)-approximate linear derivation on a commutative Banach algebra maps the algebra into its radical, and every \(\varepsilon\)-approximate linear derivation on a commutative semi-simple Banach algebra is zero. These applications give alternative proofs for the Singer-Wermer theorem and a result of \textit{M. P. Thomas} [Ann. Math. 128, 435--460 (1988; Zbl 0681.47016)]. The main theorems also generalize some results concerning functional equations.
