The authors discuss a discretization method for elliptic boundary value problems, called ``the local defect correction'' (LDC). The discretization on global uniform grids has some advantages over truly nonuniform grids. For these reasons so-called ``local uniform grid'' refinement technique are introduced, in which a coarse base grid covering the whole computational domain is locally uniform refined. A new expression for the iteration matrix of LDC is presented and it is shown that its norm is proportional to the square of the grid size of the global coarse grid. A convergence analysis of the algorithm is made for Poisson's equation on unit square. Numerical experiments are performed, when the coarse grid discretization is the standard five-point scheme.
