Around the middle of the twentieth century, \textit{Yu. V. Linnik} [Transl., Ser. 2, Am. Math. Soc. 13, 9--27 (1960; Zbl 0089.02705)] proved his celebrated equidistribution theorem for integer points on spheres. His work has stimulated a large number of subsequent papers (see for example [\textit{M. Einsiedler} et al., Ann. Math. (2) 173, No. 2, 815--885 (2011; Zbl 1248.37009)]), which dealt with a very general framework. The keywords in their approach are those of entropy and of measure rigidity. In the present paper, one of the key ingredients of this approach towards Linnik's theorem (a certain basic invariant) is generalized to the case of higher rank. The author proves strong entropy estimates. These estimates allow the author to obtain corresponding results towards equidistribution in the higher-rank case. The proofs uses a combination of geometric invariant theory, Galois action, local arithmetic estimates, and homogeneous dynamics.
