A conjecture of G. Tian and S. K. Donaldson asserts that a smooth polarized projective variety \((V,L)\) is \(K\)-stable iff it admits a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature in \(c_1(L)\), where \(K\) is a compact real reductive group. Donaldson partially confirmed this conjecture in the case of projective toric varieties; see [\textit{S. K. Donaldson}, J. Differ. Geom. 62, No.~2, 289--349 (2002; Zbl 1074.53059)]. In this paper, the authors extend Donaldson's results and computations to the case of projective reductive varieties. These results are used to produce 8-dimensional non-toric examples of projective varieties admitting no Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature.
