Let \((M,\omega,\alpha)\) be a ``quantum'' dynamical system, i.e. \(\alpha\) is an automorphism of the (non-commutative) von Neumann algebra \(M\) and \(\omega\) is an invariant state. If there exists an optimal stationary coupling with a classical (commutative) dynamical system then it is shown that \((M,\omega,\alpha)\) contains an ergodic classical system (i.e. an invariant commutative subalgebra \(B\) of \(M\) such that \(\alpha\) is ergodic on \(B\)).
