The author deduces directly the existence of formal energy using power series in step size for a symplectic scheme for Hamiltonian systems and then proves non-conservation of the original energy. Also, the formulae for calculation of the first three terms of formal energy are given for one symplectic scheme as well as for the composition of two symplectic schemes. The theory is illustrated by two examples.
