A helicoid in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\) is a ruled surface given by \(\{(u,v \cos u,v \sin u) \in \mathbb{R}^ 3 \mid u,v \in \mathbb{R}\}\), which can be considered as a pair of a line \(R = \{(u,0,0)\}\) in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\) and a map \(\varphi : \mathbb{R} \to P_ 1(R)\) given by \(u \to (\cos u, \sin u)\). The author studies a generalization of a helicoid to Kähler surfaces in a complex projective space \(P_ n (C)\). Let \(P_ 1(C)\) be a complex line in \(P_ n(C)\) and \(\varphi : P_ 1 (C) \to P_{n-2} (C)\) be a holomorphic map. Then \(M_ \varphi = \{[z + \varphi (z)] \mid z \in P_ 1 (C)\}\) is a Kähler surface in \(P_ n (C)\). The main theorem proves that if \(M_ \varphi\) is compact and of constant scalar curvature, then \(M_ \varphi\) is congruent to either a totally geodesic \(P_ 2 (C)\) or a complex quadric \(Q_ 2 = P_ 1(C) \times P_ 1(C)\).
