    Let \(S_q(n)\) denote the sum of digits of the nonnegative integer \(n\) in base \(q\). For given pairwise coprime bases \(q_1,\ldots,q_l\) and arbitrary residue classes \(a_i\bmod m_i\) with \((m_i,q_i-1)=1\) \((i=1, \ldots,l)\) the author proves (for \(0<\delta<1)\) \[ \bigl\{0\leq n<N: S_{q^i}(n) \equiv a_i \pmod{m_i},\;1\leq i<l\}= \frac{N}{m_1\cdots m_l} + O(N^{1-\delta}) (N\to \infty). \] This proves a conjecture of \textit{A. O. Gelfond} [Acta. Arith. 13, 259--265 (1968; Zbl 0155.09003), in its full strength and extends a result of \textit{J. Bésineau} [Acta Arith. 20, 401--416 (1972; Zbl 0252.10052)], where no error term is established. For a related result see \textit{J. A. Solinas} [J. Number Theory 33, 132--151 (1989; Zbl 0678.10037)]. Furthermore, an extension to \(q\)-additive functions is shown.
