    The following problem for the Kirchhoff equation is considered \[ u_{tt}-m(\int_{\Omega} \mid \nabla u(x,t)\mid^2 dx) \Delta u =0, \] \[ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\,u_t(x,0)=u_1(x), \] where \( \Omega\) is \(\mathbb R^n\,(n\geq 1)\) or a bounded \(C^2\) domain and \(u\mid_{\partial \Omega} =0;\, m(s) \geq \delta > 0\, \forall s \geq 0.\) Sufficient conditions for the existence of global strong solutions in terms of the spectral resolution of \(u_0,\,u_1\) are given. No smallness conditions are required and only Sobolev-type regularity are assumed.
