The Cauchy problem for the generalized Hunter-Saxton equation is considered on the unit circle. This equation describes evolution of rotators in liquid crystals with external magnetic force and self-interaction. The purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of a global weak solution by using the viscous approximation method and the \(L^p\) Young measure theory. The approximation sequence is constructed to solve the generalized Hunter-Saxton equation with a viscous term. Local well-posedness is proven for the viscous approximate solutions and uniform a priori energy estimates are obtained. Then, the author obtains compactness of the viscous approximate solution in \(L^{\infty}_{\mathrm{loc}}(R_+,H^2(S))\) and proves that the viscous approximate solution in the limit of zero viscosity becomes a global weak solution to the generalized Hunter-Saxton equation.
