The authors study shift spaces and apply their results to corresponding operator algebras. They show that if two one-sided shift spaces of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent then the associated two-sided shift spaces are flow equivalent. This result generalizes a claim by \textit{K. Matsumoto} and \textit{H. Matui} [Kyoto J. Math. 54, No. 4, 863--877 (2014; Zbl 1320.46055)]. They also prove that two one-sided shifts of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if the associated groupoids are isomorphic. Applications to graph algebras and Cuntz-Krieger algebras are obtained.
