Let \(G\) be a compact quantum group and let \(K\) be a subgroup of \(G\). Quantum groups are defined within the meaning of Woronowicz. The author defines zonal spherical functions and left (right) spherical functions of the quantum group \(G\) with respect to \(K\). They must satisfy certain relations which include the comultiplication in \(G\) and the mapping \(C(G)\to C(K)\). It is shown that a zonal spherical function belongs to \(C(K\backslash G/K)\) and a left (right) spherical function belongs to \(C(G/K)\) (respectively to \(C(K\backslash G))\). Other properties of spherical functions of a compact quantum group \(G\) are also given. If \(q\to 1\) then a spherical function of a quantum group \(G\) tends to the corresponding classical spherical function.
