It is well known that there is no node system \((X_ n)_{n\in N}\), \(X_ n=\{x_{1n},\dots,x_{n,n}\}\subset[-1,1]\), such that the corresponding Lagrange interpolation polynomials \(L_ n(f,X_ n,\cdot)\) converge uniformly to \(f\) on \([-1,1]\) for all \(f\in C[-1,1]\). Conversely S. Bernstein has shown that given any \(\varepsilon>0\) and \(f\in C[-1,1]\), for \(n\in N\), there is a polynomial \(p_ n\) of degree \(n+\varepsilon\cdot n\) at most interpolating \(f\) at the roots of the \(n\)th Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind such that \(p_ n\to f\) uniformly on \([-1,1]\). In this note the author proves that here the sequence \(\varepsilon\cdot n\) cannot be replaced by a sequence \(o(n)\). He conjectures that this holds true for all node systems.
