Let \(V\subset{\mathcal A}_g\) be a subvariety of the moduli space \({\mathcal A}_g\) of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension \(g\) over \(\mathbb{C}\), and for any integer \(k\) between 1 and \(g-1\) denote by \(S_k(V)\) the subset of \(V\) consisting of all points of \(V\) such that the corresponding abelian variety has an abelian subvariety of dimension \(k\). \textit{E. Colombo} and \textit{G. P. Pirola} [Math. Ann. 288, No. 1, 161-178 (1990; Zbl 0716.14015)] gave a sufficient condition for \(S(V)\) to be dense in \(V\) with respect to the metric topology. -- The present paper is an attempt to understand this result in a more general context. Let \(M_K(G,X)\) be a Shimura variety over \(\mathbb{C}\), and let \(L\) be a \(\mathbb{Q}\)-subgroup of \(G\) whose \(G(\mathbb{Q})\)-conjugacy class corresponds to a prescribed type of Hodge cycles. For every subvariety \(V\) of \(M_K(G,X)\), denote by \(S(V,L)\) the subset of points of \(V\) whose Mumford-Tate group is contained in a \(G(\mathbb{Q})\)-conjugate of \(L\). As a main result of the article, the author defines an invariant \(c(G,X,L)\) depending only on the \(G(\mathbb{R})\)-conjugacy class of \(L\) and shows that for every subvariety \(V\) of codimension at most \(c(G,X,L)\), the subset \(S(V,L)\) is dense in \(V\) in the metric topology.
