Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with unit \(1_ R\neq 0\). The most commonly used \(R\)-basis of \(R[X_{ij}]\) consists of monomials in the \(X_{ij}\). The author studies other bases, which seem to be more appropriate in certain classes. These bases are closely related to standard tableaux. The linear transformations from the monomial basis to the latter ones can be viewed as linear analogues of the Robinson-Schensted-Schützenberger-Knuth correspondence in combinatorics. The subject is based on two tools: generalized Laplace expansions and Capelli operators. Both these tools are thoroughly discussed in the paper. The tools are applied to representation theory. Let \(G\) be a finite permutation group; \(G\) acts on \(R[X_{ij}]\) as a group of \(R\)-algebra automorphisms. In many cases, the bases mentioned above reflect on one side the structure of simple \(RG\)-modules, on the other side, the right hand indices, \(j\), help via the Laplace duality to generate systematically combinatorial structures, which count the multiplicities of the simple constituents. Combining all tools, the author constructs for every skew \(RS_ n\)-module an \(R\)-basis that is adapted to a Specht series of this module. An algorithm which efficiently generates such a basis is presented. It can serve as a basis for a possible generalization of the Littlewood-Richardson rule to more general shapes.
