This work is devoted to the construction and investigation of two new classes of special functions, related to representations of groups of motions in the spaces of constant curvature as well as the unitary group of large ranks. These are special functions with matrix indices and some types of orthogonal polynomials in several continuous and discrete variables. The functions introduced generalize a number of classical scalar special functions in one variable. The type of special function that emerge out of the author's investigations into matrix elements of irreducible unitary representations are connected to groups of large ranks. In fact, he concentrates his studies on such groups as \(\text{ISO}(n)\), \(\text{SO}(n)\) and \(\text{SO}(n-1)\) which are groups of Euclidean motions, Euclidean and hyperbolized rotations of \(n\)-dimensional spaces of constant curvature as well as the unitary group \(U(n)\). This work therefore may be considered as another step in the development of group theory of special functions involving groups of large ranks and may be said to be complementary to what \textit{N. Ya. Vilenkin} [Special functions and the theory of group representations (1965; Zbl 0144.380)] achieved for groups of small rank. The author also suggests a scope for further development of the theory of its physical interpretation and applications, in particular for the calculations for the groups of big dimensions, Clebsch-Gordan, Racah coefficients and other values important in theoretical physics.
