The author studies the boundedness and compactness of pseudodifferential operators \(a(x,D)\) with non-regular symbols in several spaces of vector-valued functions, namely, in \(L^\infty(\mathbb R, V(\mathbb R))\), \(PC(\bar{\mathbb R}, V(\mathbb R))\) and \(\Lambda_\gamma(\mathbb R, V_d(\mathbb R))\), where \(V(\mathbb R)\) and \(V_d(\mathbb R)\) stand for functions defined on \(\mathbb R\) of bounded variation and bounded variation on dyadic shells, respectively, \(PC\) stands for piecewise continuous, and \(\Lambda_\gamma\) stands for Lipschitz of order \(\gamma\). It is known that such a study relies on the boundedness of the maximal Carleson singular integral operator \[ S^*f(x)= \sup_{a<b} \int_{(a,b)}\hat f(\xi)e^{i\xi x}\, d\xi. \] In the paper under review, its boundedness on weighted Lebesgue spaces is first analyzed. Then applications to pseudodifferential operators \(a(x,D)\) with non-regular symbols in the above spaces are provided. Finally, a Fredholm symbol calculus for the Banach algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators with symbols in \(PC(\bar {\mathbb R}, V(\mathbb R))\) admitting discontinuities with respect to spatial and dual variables is introduced.
