Let \(f\) be a \(C^2\) map of the unit interval with nondegenerate critical points. Let \(\mu\) be an invariant and ergodic probability measure with a positive Lyapunov exponent. The author constructs a tower in the spirit of [\textit{L.-S. Young}, Ann. Math. (2) 147, 585--650 (1998; Zbl 0945.37009)] and analyzes its Hausdorff dimension. Using such a tower, the following is proved. There exists a sequence of compact hyperbolic sets \(\Lambda_n\) supporting measures \(\mu_n\) such that: (i) \(\mu_n\to\mu\); (ii) the Hausdorff dimensions \(\dim_H(\Lambda_n)\nearrow\dim_H(\mu)\); (iii) the Hausdorff measures of these subsets are bounded away from zero. It is also checked that the pointwise dimension is a.e. the ratio between the entropy and the Lyapunov exponent. Similar results have been proved by [\textit{F. Hofbauer}, Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 15, 1119--1142 (1995; Zbl 0842.58019)].
