An exterior space (defined by the authors in [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 57, No. 2, 221--242 (1998; Zbl 0907.55017)]) is a topological space \(X\) equipped with a nonempty family of open subsets \(\varepsilon\) which is closed under finite intersections and such that any open subset of \(X\) containing an element of \(\varepsilon\) is itself in \(\varepsilon\). The main features of the category of exterior spaces are that it is both complete and co-complete and that it contains as a full subcategory the category of topological spaces with proper maps as morphisms. In this paper the authors show that for every suitable pair of exterior spaces \((T, T')\) one can construct a closed model category structure on the category of exterior spaces whose homotopy category depends on \(T\) and \(T'\).
