This equation scales the layer-specific nitrogen supply to ensure consistency with total crop nitrogen demand. When mass flow supply exceeds demand, uptake is reduced proportionally across layers; when supply is insufficient, the formulation allows increased uptake, representing diffusion-driven compensation. An upper constraint ensures that uptake from a layer cannot exceed the available nitrate in that layer. The equation produces the actual nitrogen uptake used by the crop model.

Defining Formula: UNal,i=UNl,iUNDiUNSi
UNa represents adjusted nitrogen supply rate in soil layer
UNS represents nitrogen supply rate in soil layer
UND represents plant nitrogen demand rate
i represents day index
l represents soil layer index
UN represents nitrogen supply rate in soil layer
