Bubbling phenomena in calculus of variations

In this survey article, the author discusses some problems in conformal and contact geometry for which the Palais-Smale compactness condition fails. Among the results discussed are those of Bahri concerning bubbling in Yamabe-type problems and the existence of periodic orbits in contact manifolds.
