This equation estimates the daily nitrogen demand of the crop as the difference between the ideal nitrogen content of the current biomass and the cumulative nitrogen uptake up to the previous day. The ideal nitrogen content is calculated as the product of accumulated biomass and an optimal nitrogen concentration. The formulation represents nitrogen demand as a dynamic, history-dependent quantity that increases with growth and decreases as nitrogen is taken up. It provides the demand side of the nitrogen balance used in the uptake adjustment.

Defining Formula: UNDi=cNB,iBiK=1i1UNK
UND represents plant nitrogen demand rate
cNB represents optimal nitrogen concentration for a plant
B represents accumulated plant biomass
UN represents nitrogen uptake rate of plant
i represents day index
