A strip may be characterized as an infinite locally finite connected graph that admits an automorphism with finitely many orbits. The orbit structure of edge-transitive strips is investigated in detail. In particular, it is proved that all edge-transitive strips have all vertices of even valency. The main result of the paper is a deep theorem characterizing all the edge-transitive strips that are planar.
