Gaussian scrolls, Gaussian flags and duality

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: A projective variety whose Gauss map has lower-dimensional image is either equal to or dual to a developable (tangent) scroll, and conversely. This result, which settles a question going back to Griffiths-Harris (1979), is obtained as a by-product of a general duality theory for scrolls whose tangent space is constant along rulings.
