Abstract: We prove an inequality for the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K_{lambda,mu}(q)$. As a corollary, we obtain a nontrivial lower bound for the Kostka numbers and a new proof of the Berenstein-Zelevinsky weight-multiplicity-one-criterium.
