Abstract: A compactly generated group is noncompact if and only if it admits a nonconstant harmonic function (for some, equivalently for every, reasonable measure). This generalizes the known fact that a finitely generated group is infinite if and only if it admits a nonconstant harmonic function (for some, equivalently every, reasonable measure).
