The authors introduce the generalized Kontorovich-Lebedev transform \(KL[f](y):=<f(x),K_{iy}(x)>\) for elements f of the dual \(U'_ a\) of a suitably defined testing function space \(U_ a\). These investigations are mainly based on the thesis of \textit{G. Buggle} [Die Kontorovich- Lebedev-Transformation und die Mehler-Fok-Transformation für Klassen verallgemeinerter Funktionen, TH Darmstadt (1977)] but also contain some new results concerning the asymptotic behaviour of \(C^{\infty}\)- functions \(\phi\) for which all powers of the differential operator \(x^ 2D^ 2_ x+xD_ x-x^ 2\) are \(O(x^ a)\) for \(x\to \infty\), respectively \(O(x^{-a})\) for \(x\to 0\), \(a>0\). It is shown that the family \(T_ y\), \(y>0\), of operators \[ (T_ y\phi)(x):=\int^{\infty}_{0}\exp [-(x^ 2y^ 2+y^ 2z^ 2+z^ 2x^ 2)/(2xyz)]\phi (z)dz/z, \] closely connected with the product formula for the Macdonald functions, maps the testing function space continuously into itself. The definition of the generalized translation operator on \(U'_ a\) and of the convolution, obeying the convolution theorem \(KL[f*g]=KL[f]\cdot KL[g]\), follows standard lines.
