The general solutions \(f:{\mathbb{R}}^ 2\to {\mathbb{R}}\) of \[ (1)\quad s^ 2(f(x+t,y)+f(x-t,y))-t^ 2(f(x,y+s)+f(x,y-s))=2(s^ 2-t^ 2)f(x,y) \] and those bounded on a set of positive measure are enumerated (the latter are fairly general polynomials of fourth degree). The proofs are sketched. The general solutions and the general bounded solutions on a set of positive measure of the equation (2) \(f(x+t,y)+f(x- t,y)=f(x,y+s)+f(x,y-s)\) have been determined by \textit{M. A. McKiernan} [Aequationes Math. 8, 263-266 (1972; Zbl 0248.39002)] and by \textit{D. Girod} [ibid. 9, 157-164 (1973; Zbl 0276.39005)], respectively. Every solution of (1) evidently satisfies also (2).
