Let X be a metric space and let \({\mathcal F}(X)\) denote the Hausdorff- metrized hyperspace of all nonempty finite subsets of X. The authors characterize those spaces X for which \({\mathcal F}(X)\) is homeomorphic to the (topologically unique) countable-dimensional linear metric space \(\ell^ 2_ f=\{(t_ i)\in \ell^ 2:t_ i=0\) for almost all \(i\}\) : such an X must be a nondegenerate, connected, locally path-connected union of countably many finite-dimensional compact subsets. The characterization also applies to any \(F_{\sigma}\)-subspace \({\mathcal E}\) of \({\mathcal F}(X)\) with the property that \(F\in {\mathcal E}\) whenever \(F\in {\mathcal F}(X)\) and F contains some element of \({\mathcal E}\). Moreover, the connectedness requirement can be dropped provided each element of \({\mathcal E}\) meets each component of X.
