The semigroup structure of a semigroup S extends uniquely by continuity to make \(\beta S\), the Stone-Čech compactification of S, a compact left-topological semigroup. Let \(\kappa\) be a cardinal and let \(U_{\kappa}(S)\) denote the set of points \(x\in \beta S\) such that \(x\not\in A^-\) if \(A\subset S\) has cardinal smaller than \(\kappa\). When the closed set \(U_{\kappa}(S)\) is a subsemigroup of \(\beta S\), the author analyzes its ideal structure, for example, characterizing its minimal right ideals and its minimal ideal. Amplifying on earlier work of his with J. S. Pym, the author also shows that if S is cancellative and \(p\in \beta S\setminus S\) is an idempotent, then each neighbourhood of p contains a free group on \(2^{{\mathfrak c}}\) generators.
