The paper aims to construct periodic scaling vectors and corresponding multiwavelets in the multivariate setting. Generalizing the concept of multiresolution analysis to the multivariate periodic case, nonstationary refinement equations of the form \[ \phi_k=\sum_{\ell \in L_{k+1}} H_{k+1}(\ell)\phi_{k+1}(\cdot - 2\pi M^{-(k+1)}\ell),\quad k=0,1,\ldots, \] are obtained, where \(\phi_k=(\phi_{k,1},\ldots ,\phi_{k,r})\) is the periodic scaling vector of level \(k\), the dilation matrix \(M\) is an \((s\times s)\)-integer matrix with \(\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty} M^{-n}=0\), and \(L_{k+1}\) denotes the full collection of coset representatives of \(Z^s/M^{k+1}Z^s\). Using Fourier coefficients, the above equation can be transferred to a product form. However, the solution requires a detailed analysis of the convergence of infinite matrix products. Conditions are given for the solutions to be in \(L^2([0,2\pi]^s)\) and to generate a periodic multiresolution of multiplicity \(r\). Further, a general algorithm for the construction of multidimensional periodic multiwavelets is presented. The theory is applied to periodic box splines in a three direction mesh.
