Let \(E\) be a function space with a norm \(\|\cdot\|\) and let \(G\) be a finite-dimensional subspace of \(E\). One of the principal themes in approximation theory is to study the following problems: For each \(f\in E\), find \(f^*\in G\) such that \(E_ G(f)= \| f-f^*\|= \inf_{g\in G} \| f- g\|\) and estimate \(E_ G(f)\). In this book, approximating spaces are Haar like spaces. The contents of the book are mostly new recent results based on research papers of some mathematicians working in the field. The book consists of Chapters 1 to 5 and Appendix 1 and 2. In Chapter 1, Haar like spaces are defined and several examples of Haar like spaces are given. Chapter 2 deals with characterizations of approximating spaces of \(C[a,b]\) or \(C_ 0(Q)\) where \(Q\) is a locally compact subset of \(\mathbb{R}\) and elements of \(C_ 0(Q)\) are real-valued continuous functions for \(Q\) such that \(\{x\in Q: | f(x)|\geq\varepsilon\}\) is compact for each \(\varepsilon>0\). Chapter 3 deals with derivative spaces, separated representations, adjoined functions and best \(L^ 1\)-approximations for Haar like spaces of \(F[a,b]\), the space of all real-valued functions on \([a,b]\). Chapter 4 deals with best approximations by monotone increasing or convex functions in spaces of vector valued functions of bounded variation. In Chapter 5, approximation by step functions is studied. In Appendix 1, the author introduces a very simple method of designing tilings through a slight modification of Dirichlet tilings and shows some expressive tilings obtained by personal computers. Appendix 2 deals with a certain property, called MD-property, of the finite decomposition of a set. At the end of each chapter, some interesting problems are listed. The book will be very useful to researchers in the area for whom this is meant.
