Let \(f\) be a non-constant holomorphic self-map of the unit disk \(\Delta\) which is not an automorphism. By a classical result of Denjoy and Wolff, there exists \(\tau\in \overline\Delta\) such that the iterates \(f^ n\) of \(f\) converge to \(\tau\) locally uniformly. The point \(\tau\) is called the Denjoy-Wolff point of \(f\). A simply connected domain \(V\subset \Delta\) is called a fundamental set if \(f(V)\subset V\) and for any compact \(K\subset \Delta\), there exists \(n\) such that \(f^ n(K)\subset V\). Suppose for the following that \(f'(\tau)\neq 0\) if \(\tau\in \Delta\). \textit{C. C. Cowen} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 265, 69-95 (1981; Zbl 0476.30017)] has shown that then there exists a fundamental set \(V\) such that \(f\) is univalent on \(V\). Moreover, there exist a domain \(\Omega\in \{\mathbb{C},\Delta\}\), a linear fractional transformation \(\Phi: \Omega\to\Omega\), and a holomorphic map \(\sigma: \Delta\to\Omega\) such that \(\sigma\) is univalent on \(V\), \(\sigma(V)\) is a fundamental set for \(\Phi\), and \(\sigma\circ f= \Phi\circ \sigma\). Here \(\Phi\) is unique up to conjugation by linear fractional transformations from \(\Omega\) onto \(\Omega\), and \(\Phi\) and \(\sigma\) depend only on \(f\) but not on \(V\). A holomorphic self-map \(g\) of \(\Delta\) is said to be in the pseudo- iteration semigroup of \(f\) if there exists a linear fractional transformation \(\Psi\) which commutes with \(\Phi\), that is \(\Phi\circ\Psi= \Psi\circ\Phi\), such that \(\sigma\circ g= \Psi\circ\sigma\). It is known that if \(f\) and \(g\) commute, then they have the same Denjoy-Wolff point. This paper addresses the question whether two non-constant holomorphic self-maps \(f\) and \(g\) of \(\Delta\) which are not automorphisms must commute, if they have the same Denjoy-Wolff point \(\tau\) and if \(g\) is in the pseudo-iteration semigroup of \(f\). It is shown that this is the case if \(\tau\in \Delta\) or if \(\tau\in \partial\Delta\) and there exists \(z_ 0,w_ 0\in \Delta\) such that \(f^ n(z_ 0)\to \tau\) and \(g^ n(w_ 0)\to\tau\) non-tangentially.
