The equations which describe the dynamics of a damped gyroscopic system are reduced to a compact form, and then a real orthogonal decoupling method is proposed to decouple the equations. The coefficients of damped eigenfrequencies and the dynamic response can be found in a separate way. As all the procedures are performed in real domain and the transformations are orthogonal, the method is computationally stable. An another advantage of the method is that it does not require the eigenvalues to be non-degenerate and the solution of the left-eigenvector problem to be known. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.
