Let \(M\) be an orientable, irreducible 3-manifold with a torus \(T\) as a boundary component. For an essential simple loop \(\gamma\) on \(T\) one may form a manifold \(M (\gamma)\) by gluing a solid torus to \(T\) so that \(\gamma\) is a meridian curve of the solid torus. This process is called Dehn filling. This paper shows that, under certain hypotheses, if there are loops \(\gamma\) and \(\gamma'\) for which \(M(\gamma)\) is reducible and \(M (\gamma')\) is toroidal then the minimal geometric intersection number of \(\gamma\) and \(\gamma'\) is at most 3. This improves previously known bounds.
