Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be an arrangement of hyperplanes in \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\) containing the origin, and let \(M(\mathcal{A})\) be the complement of the union of these hyperplanes. The author studies the fundamental group \(\pi_{1}(M(\mathcal{A}))\) and certain subgroups of it. More precisely, for an element \(X\) of the intersection lattice of \(\mathcal{A}\), set \(\mathcal{A} _{X}=\{H\in \mathcal{A}:H\supseteq X\}\). The author exhibits natural embeddings of \(M(\mathcal{A}_{X})\) in \(M(\mathcal{A})\) that give rise to monomorphisms from \(\pi _{1}(M(\mathcal{A}_{X}))\) to \(\pi _{1}(M(\mathcal{A}))\). The images of these monomorphisms are called intersection subgroups of type \(X\), and it is proved that they form a conjugacy class of subgroups of \(\pi _{1}(M(\mathcal{A}))\). The main result of the paper is a characterization of the centralizer, the normalizer, and the commensurator of \(\pi _{1}(M(\mathcal{A}_{X}))\) in \(\pi _{1}(M(\mathcal{A}))\). The starting point is an investigation of the projection \(p:M(\mathcal{A})\rightarrow M(\mathcal{A}/X)\) induced by the projection \(\mathbb{C} ^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}^{n}/X\). In particular, it is proved that \(p\) is a locally trivial \(C^{\infty }\) fibration if \(X\) is modular.
