A completion of a subset $K$ of a finite-dimensional normed space is a set containing $K$, having diameter equal to that of $K$, and satisfying the property that adding any point to it increases its diameter. In this paper, the authors examine normed spaces $X$ with the property, denoted by ($U_1$), that some nondegenerate segment in $X$ has a unique completion. The main result of the paper is that, if every complete set in $X$ is a ball, then $X$ satisfies ($U_1$), and if $X$ satisfies ($U_1$), then every set of constant width in $X$ is a ball. \par They also investigate the relation between Property ($U_1$) and other notions related to completeness and constant width, and generalize this property to equilateral simplices in place of segments in two different ways.
