Some foliation and compactification techniques are developed and applied to two geometric questions. The first one concerns Zoll manifolds, that is, Riemannian manifolds for which all geodesics are simple and closed, of the same length. Assume that a real analytic Zoll manifold \(M\), diffeomorphic to the sphere \(S^n\), has an entire adapted complex structure on the tangent space \(TM\), which means that the leaves of the Riemannian foliation are complex manifolds. Then \(M\) is shown to be isometric to \(S^n\). The second setting deals with potential theoretic characterizations of affine algebraic manifolds. Namely, let \(X\) be an \(n\)-dimensional Stein manifold with a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion function \(\tau\), such that \((\partial\bar\partial \log\tau)^n=0\) outside a compact subset of \(X\). Under a certain additional condition on \(X\), it is shown to be an affine algebraic variety with coordinate ring formed by functions of polynomial growth with respect to \(\tau\).
