The theory of a Cosserat surface is applied in the analysis of localized axisymmetric buckling deformation in cylindrical shells under axial compression. The material is treated as rigid-plastic with isotropic work hardening. It is found that neither deformation due to transverse shear nor work hardening of the material has significant effect on the shape of the buckling mode. Localization of the buckling deformation is governed by a characteristic length formed from the shell radius and thickness.
