A uniformly elliptic (but not necessarily definite) boundary value problem in the unit square with first kind (Dirichlet) conditions and second kind (Neumann) or third kind conditions on parts of the boundary (but all complete edges) is discretized with Hermite cubic splines and collocation at the Gauss points, and the discrete problem is preconditioned with the help of a bilinear finite element discretization (using the same collocation points) of a related definite (simpler) elliptic problem. Equivalent one-dimensional problems are treated, too. The main results follow from a detailed analysis given here: bounds on the eigenvalues and ``clustering'' of the singular values of the preconditioned matrix for a selfadjoint positive definite problem and for the general case. However: for the actual proofs the authors refer to a forthcoming paper of the second author and \textit{E. E. Rothmann} on a related technique with Legendre spectral collocation [Preconditioning Legendre spectral collocation approximations to elliptic problems, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. (to appear)] and to 5 other works -- this and other proceedings (e.g. the citation of a preprint without any hint to institution, year, series, number,\dots, of the preprint) are too small courtesy towards an interested scientific community!
