Embedding obstructions for the generalized quaternion group (Q1975914)

This paper considers obstructions to the solvability of certain embedding problems, primarily those concerning the generalized quaternion group of order \(2^n\) over fields of characteristic not \(2\). The authors begin by reinterpreting the Galois embedding problem with abelian kernel in terms of certain cohomological conditions. A number of results are obtained relating solutions for given embedding problems to solutions for associated problems (whose solvability is necessary for solvability of the original problem). The article concludes with several specific examples concerning realizability of the quaternion groups \(Q_8\) and \(Q_{16}\), with realizability determined by conditions on the base field.
