The authors develop in this long paper the necessary technical tools for the study of functionals of the form \(tr(Ae^{-tP})\) where \(A\) and \(P\) are pseudo-differential operators acting on smooth functions of a non-commutative torus, \(P\) is elliptic, as well as the related zeta-type functionals \(tr(AP^{-s})\) and related natural problems. Asymptotics \(s \rightarrow 0\) and \(t\rightarrow 0\) are announced as one of the goals of the constructions, but postponed to follow-up publications. The present paper seems to be starting point of this ambitious project by giving the necessary background and first partial results (\(P\) of Laplace type) in the last sections. For this difficult problem, the present work builds with great the necessary functional calculus on a quite wide class of operators on smooth functions defined on a non-commutative torus: symbols, their composition and their order, smoothing operators, parametrix, families depending on a parameter, localization of the spectrum, among other properties. Appendix A on improper integrals with values in a locally convex space is also very welcome: the exposition is very clear.
